Mercy Falls: A Scottish Predator in the Scottish Highlands

By Hugh Barnes

August 20, 2023

Writer-director Ryan Hendrick's Mercy Falls is the latest in a long line of Scottish horror films that have attempted to cash in on the success of the Predator franchise. Unfortunately, this one comes up short, failing to deliver on its promise of a tense and terrifying experience.

The film follows a group of young hikers who venture into the remote Scottish Highlands, only to be stalked by a mysterious creature that begins to pick them off one by one. The cast is led by Kate Dickie (Game of Thrones), who gives a strong performance as the group's leader. However, the rest of the cast is largely forgettable, and the characters they play are poorly developed.

The biggest problem with Mercy Falls is its lack of originality. The film borrows heavily from Predator, The Blair Witch Project, and other horror classics. As a result, it never feels like anything more than a cheap knockoff.

The film's biggest disappointment is its lack of gore. Given the film's premise, one would expect it to be full of bloody violence. However, the gore is surprisingly restrained. This is likely due to the film's low budget, but it still leaves the film feeling incomplete.

Overall, Mercy Falls is a disappointing horror film that fails to live up to its potential. The film is unoriginal, poorly acted, and lacking in gore. If you're looking for a good horror movie, I recommend looking elsewhere.
